Barbara Jean Lacy, 87, of Cheney, passed away July 1, 2025 with her loving family by her side. She was born October 15, 1937 in Anaheim, California the daughter of Richard and Hazel (Padget) Smith. Among survivors is her son, Robert and his wife Judy of Cheney.
This is what Barbara had written:
I was born again in the spring of 1949. I had a Sunday School Teacher by the name of Mrs. Cissell I had met in 1946 that lived at 608 N. Grove. I would put my roller skates on and go to her home when I lived at 1801 E. 9th. She would buy me Christian Workbooks and talked to me about Jesus. By this time, she had become sickly. I would often find her laying in bed, but she always had time to get up and visit with me, often preparing lunch for the 2 of us. I remember she would often times make a hamburger steak and vegetables as well as a little bowl of pears. I remember she had 2 living room chairs and one day she asked me if I would like to invite Jesus into my heart. I said yes. We got on our knees, she at one of the chairs and I knelt at the other, as Mrs. Cissell introduced me to Jesus. I stumbled many times as I was growing up but would always find Jesus waiting for me when I would come back to Him. On one occasion in 1955 when I was a senior in high school a neighbor invited me to go to Haysville Baptist Church where I was Baptized. I had met Chet in 1950 when I was 15 years of age. In 1960 I was working at Boeing Aircraft and Chet called me at work saying he wanted to talk with me. I went out to his car in the parking lot. Chet told me he wanted to marry me, but one of the stipulations was he wanted our marriage to be based upon Christian Principals. In my heart I knew that was what I wanted as well. Chet led in prayer that evening, praying if it was God’s will, we would get married, if not He would let us know. Chet and I did get married Feb. 18, 1961. Chet passed away January 7, 2005. Chet and I started going to Allerton Southern Baptist Church in February 1961, where his brother and family went and had always been a big influence in Chet’s life. We always tried to be faithful to God who led us through our lives. We were so poor the church people brought us a much needed food basket at Christmas time. Not realizing it at the time we acquired some very dear friends that remained friends throughout our entire lives. Leroy and Mary Lou Grandstaff, George and Carolyn Blades, Bill and Lou Ricketts and many others. These kinds of friends have remained dearer than even family. We traveled together on vacations and raised our families together. After a church split, we moved our attendance to Amidon Street Baptist in April of 1980. Chet felt trouble brewing in the church and did not want to be tangled in another church split so we moved our attendance to Salem Missionary Baptist Church in July 1984. We stayed there until we moved to Cheney. Chet was getting very ill with lung cancer by this time. I asked him to lead me to another church before he left me. He told me he had met a pastor and had told him he was going to visit his church one day. Just prior to Chet’s death he did go with me to Ninnescah Southern Baptist Church, in the heart of Cheney. Chet passed away January 7, 2005. Mary Lou and Leroy had come to the funeral home in Garden Plain and found me there with Chet. Knowing I was in distress, talked me into coming home, saying she wanted to spend the night with me. The next morning, we went to Ninnescah where I did go forward to join their church.
