Benny Vaughn, retired Sedgwick County Deputy passed away on Friday, June 7, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was 82.
Benny was born on August 31, 1941 in Wayton, Arkansas to Lawrence and Gussie (Taylor) Vaughn. He grew up in the mountains of Arkansas, moved to Wichita at the age of 14 and graduated from South High School in 1960. He married Michelle Wanko on November 10, 1962. In 1968 Benny became a deputy sheriff and moved to Andale to raise his family. Benny was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved being outdoors. He also loved gardening and woodworking. He shared his love of hunting, fishing and woodworking with his grandchildren and many other youths. After retirement from the Sheriff’s Dept., he added raising poultry and bees to his list of hobbies.
Benny is preceded in death by his parents Lawrence and Gussie, sister Katherine Brasel, brother Marvin, brother in-law Larry Jacobs, and grandsons Zachariah Harp and Samuel Harp.
He is survived by his wife Michelle, four children; Mark (Sue) Vaughn Andale, Jennifer Harp, Wichita. Kevin (Misti) Vaughn Wichita, Kathleen Vaughn, Andale, along with 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Terry (Linda), Stanley (Sandy), sister Brenda Jacobs and brother-in-law Garland Brasel.
He will always be remembered for helping others, his vegetable gardens and his chickens but most especially for his bees. Benny had a pacemaker which was donated to the Kansas State University College of Veterinary School of Medicine. In lieu of flowers, friends and family are invited to make a donation in his name to the Guadalupe Clinic in Wichita KS
A recitation of the Holy Rosary will be 7:00 pm, Sunday, June 16, 2024 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am, Monday, June 17, 2024. Both at St Joseph Catholic Church, 318 Rush Street, Andale KS.
