Bernard “Bernie” Matthew Engelbrecht was born on October 15th, 1936 to Ben and Annie (Giefer) Engelbrecht. He grew up on a farm just south of Andale and attended Andale schools. His work life started as a cook at the Wichita Airport and the Seneca Bowling Alley before becoming a custodial veteran of 20+ years at Andale Elementary/High School. Outside of his work duties, Bernie found joy in baking goods for Andale sport teams. He took pride in keeping the football field will kept. He dedicated many of these hours on his own time. Bernie was a lifelong KU and Yankees fan. He was also a 100+ pint donor to the American Red Cross. During his retirement years, Bernie’s hobbies consisted of tending to his garden, making afghans (blankets), baking his famous Christmas sugar cookies and going to daily Mass. His Catholic faith was his number one priority in life. Bernie was preceded in death by his parents; Ben and Annie (Giefer) Engelbrecht, his sister; Agnes, 1 niece and 1 nephew. He was surrounded by a village of care givers; Wayne, Duane and Shane Gorges. Mark & Tammy Kerschen and family, Crystal Grimes, Dave & Vicky Winter and Lance Reid. He was also survived by 3 nieces. Recitation of the rosary will be said at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 2, 2026, followed by a funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. both at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Andale, Ks.
