Carol Ellen Ross

Carol Ellen Ross (97) was born on December 25, 1926, at Altamont, Kansas, the daughter of George Elmer and Irene Sheldon Martin and died on September 23, 2024.

She attended grade school in Altamont and graduated from Labette County Community High School in 1944. Then she attended Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas, and in 1950 graduated from Kansas State Teachers College, Pittsburg, Kansas, with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics. She was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority. She married William Samuel Ross on July 19, 1946, in Altamont. They were the parents of three sons: John Stephen, George Stanley, and Sidney Scott. After graduating from college in 1950, the family moved to Wichita where Bill began working at Cessna Aircraft. Five years later they moved to Cheney. She did substitute teaching in Cheney High School and worked in a flower shop until she became employed by the Cheney Post Office, where she worked for 17 years before retiring in 1988.

As a member of Cheney United Methodist Church, she served as a Sunday School teacher, worked in the Cheney United Methodist Women, and sang in the church choir. Always interested in community affairs, she worked as a leader of the Cub Scouts and served on the Cheney School Board of Education. She moved to Dove Estates in Goddard in January 2019, and the family wishes to thank the staff for the loving care that she received while residing there. The family also wishes to thank Marlene and Larry Denney for the countless hours of support and love they provided.

She is survived by son John (Janet) of Lawrence, son Scott (Marcella) of Denver, daughter-in-law Tina of Denver, six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and one sister.

A memorial service will be held at the Cheney Methodist Church on November 9 at 1:00pm. The family suggests memorial contributions to Good Shepherd Hospice, 7829 E. Rockhill, Suite 403, Wichita, KS 67206 and Cheney Methodist Church, 406 W. 3rd Avenue, Cheney, KS 67025 (write “Women” on the memo line).
