Charles "Pop" Worthy Obituary

Charles Douglas “Pop” Worthy age 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by family. He was born on March 14th, 1935 in Fayette, Alabama to Charles Cornelus Worthy and Frances Dickerson.

Pop was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and gardener. However, to his family, loved ones, and those close to him, he was so much more. He was, and will always be a hero to them for showing love, patience, and kindness throughout all aspects of his life.

Grandpa Red “Pop”, had a way of reacting that made people feel ten feet tall. When he was proud, you knew it.  His excitement was genuine, big and joyful. He loved his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids with all of his heart. He was the kind of man that would give you the shirt off his back without a second thought.

He loved watching wresting —WWF and WWE—and was passionate about college football, especially the Alabama Crimson Tide. It wasn’t a real game until he yelled, “ROLL TIDE!”

Gardening was his passion. His whole family lived off his fruits and vegetables from his 11+acres of gardens. Tomato’s, Okra, Cucumbers, cantaloupe, potatoes, green beans, and most importantly watermelon —which must be eaten with salt. He used to warn that if you swallowed a watermelon seed, a watermelon plant would grow in your belly!

His patience was unmatched. All the grandkids took turns staying the nights and summers at Grandma and Grandpa Red’s house. Always a house full of children— just the way he liked it! He would tell stories with just the right amount of trickery to calm restless grandkids to bed. He would scratch the headboard and say werewolves were outside or the last one to sleep would be abducted by aliens. Somehow it always worked.

He was married to Earline “Carlton” Worthy on August 14th, 1954 —66 years of marriage. He was 19 and she was only 15 when they started their lives together. That kind of love and loyalty is hard to come by these days. They had four children— Billy, Charles, Lorri, and Sundra.

But the thing to be remembered most is the way he loved— fully, unconditionally, and without ever needing to say it twice. You felt every hug, every intentionally goofy smile or occasional howl that he would make to create a room full of laughter. He gave his life, his love, and his time in true devotion to his family.
