Derease Dorraine (Edgmon) McLain

Derease Dorraine (Edgmon) McLain, age 67, of Bentley, Kansas, passed away on September 7, 2025. She was born on February 12, 1958, in Wichita, Kansas, to the late Jack and Roberta Edgmon.

Derease grew up in Bentley and was a member of the Halstead High School Class of 1976. Though she lived in many places throughout her life, her heart and soul always remained in Bentley, where she returned and resided at the time of her passing.

She is survived by her siblings Shirlene (Frank) LeBleu, Melinda (Randy) Carroll, Phillip (Shelley) Edgmon, and Jacqueline (Eric) Michalowski. She was preceded in death by her brother Monroe Edgmon.

Derease was the devoted mother of Jennifer (Ryan) Linton of Halstead, Bradley McLain of Osawatomie, Jamie (Brandon) Hill of Goddard, and Trevor McLain of Bentley. She leaves behind nine grandchildren she dearly loved: Braxton, Sloane, Maxx, Marissa, Kaydence, Madisyn, Kiya, Baylee, and Valisity.

From an early age, Derease learned the value of hard work from her parents and grandparents. Throughout her life, she brought the same unwavering work ethic to every role—whether in factories, medical offices, at home, or in the trucking industry, where she retired as an office manager. Alongside her professional work, she was an entrepreneur at heart, running businesses that reflected her creative talents, including ceramics, quilting, and embroidery.

Derease’s hands were rarely still. She was an avid gardener, quilter, seamstress, crocheter, and cross-stitcher. She poured her creativity into everything she did, crafting beauty and usefulness out of simple materials.

Those who knew her best will remember Derease as genuine and to the point—there was only ever one version of her. She lived by simple but enduring rules: Work hard. Be genuine. Keep family together.

She will be deeply missed by all who loved her, and her memory will live on in the lives of her children, grandchildren, family, and friends.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 13th, at Pleasant Valley Church outside of Bentley, with a celebration of her life to follow at the Bentley Senior Center.
