Donald Metzen Obituary

Donald P. Metzen, 81, passed away on Friday, August 2, 2024.

Don was a much-loved husband, father, grandfather “gramps”, great-grandfather, brother and friend to many. Born in Wichita, KS, he attended school at St. John Catholic School in Clonmel, even as the only one in his class, and graduated from Garden Plain High School.  At GPHS he met the love of his life, Aggie, (though she felt quite differently about him at first), but he eventually won her over and they were then inseparable, married for over 60 years, and would not even allow death to separate them for long.

Don spent his life as a truck driver, a barber, a farmer and rancher, but he loved doing whatever he could for the service of others best. Don served his community by serving on the KEPCo Board for 17 years and Sedgwick County Electric Cooperative Board for 24 years; and his service was especially seen as a volunteer and supporter of so many St. Joe, Ost events over the years, as Don drove all the kids on the bus and was known as “Gramps” to all.  But Don’s love for his family and friends was second to none, always there with a smile, his big chuckle, or stopping by to share his pickled green tomatoes and salsa, and if anyone was ever in need of a mint, Don had at least one in his pocket for you.

Don was preceded in death by his parents William “Bill” and Agnes C. Metzen, his wife Agnes, his son Greg, and his siblings: LeRoy Metzen, Jerome Metzen, and Dorothy Albers.  He is survived by his Daughter: Gloria (Mike) Puetz, Siblings: Rita Scheer, Sister Ann Metzen, OP, and Billy (Helen) Metzen, Siblings-in-law: Mary Metzen and Don Albers, Grandchildren: Michalya (Skip), Mackenzie (Jagger), Madison (Adam) and Greg, and Great-grandchildren: Bexleigh, Holland, Sterling and one on the way.

Recitation of the Rosary Vigil will be at 7:00pm on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, and a Funeral Mass will be at 10:30am on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, both at St. John Catholic Church in Clonmel, KS.  Burial to follow in St. Joe, Ost, KS.
