Elsie Fisher Obituary

Elsie C. Fisher, 91 passed away peacefully on Friday May 23rd, 2025 in Wichita Kansas. Born on May 25, 1933, in Saginaw, Michigan. Elsie was the only child of Florence M. (Gnatkowski) Fisher and Gerald E. Fisher. At a young age Elsie began working with her parents at the Saginaw Western Union. After graduating from the University of Michigan, she took a job with The Wichita Council of Campfire Girls. She packed her car and drove by herself from Saginaw, MI to Wichita, KS. Elsie accepted the position of Director of Camp Ko-ha-me and Field Director, which included recruitment. After retirement, Elsie made her home at Anthony and Port Aransas.

Elsie was well known and respected in the birding community in both Kansas and Pt. Aransas, TX. She enjoyed volunteering at the Whooping Crane Festival and leading the morning bird walks at the Leona Bell Turnbull Birding Center in Port Aransas. She was an active member of the Corpus Christi Audubon Outdoor Club. In Kansas she was best known as the discoverer of the Pyrhulloxia at the Anthony City Lake in 2018. She also developed the Elsie C. Fisher Nature Birding Trail at Anthony City Lake. She was an active participant in the annual Christmas Bird Count. Elsie and her dear friend June Obley were passionate about volunteering for the Harper County Conservation Earth Day birding sessions.

Elsie loved nature, canoeing, birding, all of her dogs throughout her life, and sponsoring new AA Members. She accepted the Lord as her savior, helping many along her journey. Elsie had many dear friends at the Anthony Christian Church Sunday school class. She blessed many with her famous chocolate cake and a lesson on what feathered friend was nearby. Elsie will be deeply missed by many.

Elsie’s family were her friends, Ron and Bonny Giesen, Janet Krack, Karl and Mary Herald, Dora Main and many, many others.

Memorials may be made to Elsie C. Fisher Nature Birding Trail at Anthony City Lake or Harper County Conservation District “Earth Day Birding session” and sent to: Wulf-Ast Mortuary (911 Biermann St. Garden Plain, KS 67050).
