Frederick Hawk Obituary

Frederick E. “Fred” Hawk, 88, retired educator, auto mechanic, and veteran passed away on Thursday, March 6th, 2025 at home in Wichita, Kansas. He was born in Hill City, Kansas on July 18, 1936, to Fred and Sarah (White) Hawk. He graduated from Norton High School in 1955. He continued his education at Kansas State University where his love of farming inspired him to obtain his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. After earning his degree, he spent 17 years teaching various topics that included vocational agriculture, driver’s ed for motorcycles and automobiles, and later hunter safety training.  He shared his knowledge at Fairview, Bird City, and McDonald high schools before coming back to Norton. In Norton he became a small business owner and operator of Hawk Repair and Services. He could service anything from a motorcycle to a combine and everything in between.

Fred served in the Kansas National Guard for 8 years. He supported the local community by volunteering with the rural Norton County fire department for almost 25 years where he served as the fire chief for 20 years. He was active in his Catholic church and Knights of Columbus. He lived by the principles of honesty, integrity, and treating everyone with equal dignity and respect. Fred most loved to be around his family. He enjoyed many passions throughout his life that included bee keeping, hunting, fishing, camping, riding motorcycles and tinkering with antique tractors which he sometimes rode in Norton parades. During retirement he found joy in watching and feeding the backyard birds, squirrels and other critters as they came along.

Fred is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Eloise of Wichita, KS; his children Karla (Mike) of Wichita, KS, Amy (Matt) of Meridian, ID, Tracy of North Platte, NE, Troy (Jodi) of Lincoln, NE, Elizabeth (Amy) of Andale, KS; his siblings Mary Jane of Penokee, KS, John of Denver, CO, Arvid (Anne) of Minneapolis, MN, and Duane (Marge) of North Platte, NE; 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Lottie Wiltfong; sister-in-law Pearl Hawk; and brother-in-law Charlie Hill.
