James “Jim” Edwin Sherman, age 64, of Wichita, peacefully passed away on May 13, 2026, at Via Christi Ascension Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.
Jim was born on December 22, 1961, in Eureka, Kansas. He was the son of Edwin Sherman and Greta Underwood Sherman.Jim grew up on the family farm near Toronto, Kansas. Learning to drive at an early age, he always had a love of cars. As a young boy, he helped work in the fields and with the animals on the farm. Graduating from Yates Center High School with the class of 1980.
Jim had lived in Wichita for more than 35 years and held various jobs. He enjoyed working at Wichita State University and the Sedgwick County Zoo tending the grounds and gardens. Jim had an ornery sense of humor and loved to tease and play pranks on his friends. He loved Halloween and made elaborate costumes for many years. He could be quite passionate about his political and social beliefs. He always had at least one cat and sometimes several for a pet.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Greta Sherman Bachelder and brother-in-law, Herbert Fife.
He leaves behind his long-time partner in life, Kevin Smith of Wichita, his father, Edwin Sherman of Toronto, Kansas, his sister, Nancy Fife-Eagle (Kevin) of Virgil, Kansas, nephew Nathan Fife of Toronto, KS, and a niece, Elizabeth (Michael) Stockebrand of Yates Center, KS. He is also survived by many cousins, a great niece and three great nephews. He leaves a good friend, Jackie Billings and his cat, Stevie.
Cremation is planned and a Celebrations of Life will be held at a later date. The family suggests memorials to the Harry Hynes Hospice of Wichita.
