Margaret A. Cates, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great and great-great grandmother, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2025 at the age of 82. She was surrounded by loving family and friends during her final days.
Margaret was born on December 18, 1942 in Slayden, Tennessee. She was known for being a generous, hardworking, and courageous woman that could overcome any storm that came her way. She was a devoted mother that loved being around family and having family gatherings. She was Granny to all that knew and loved her. She also loved to travel and had been to every state in the United States with the exception of Hawaii and Alaska. She had also traveled to Canada and the Bahamas. She loved to read her Bible and her spiritual devotions as well as attend church every Sunday.
Margaret is survived by her two sisters, Willadean Hood (Eugene) and Katherine Hayes (Don), her eight children, Barbara Goodwin (Tina), Tammy Lawler, Virginia Habash (Raymond), Loretta Donegan, Roy Donegan, Darren Donegan, Maggie Cates, and Danny Cates (Lisa), her sixteen grandchildren, Jeffrey Potter (Helen), Roseanna McIllwain (Sean), Christina Yaverski (Chris), Josh Hanner (Leslie), Justin Hanner, Jessica Lawler, Kyra Davis, Matthew Habash, Miriam Habash, Catlin Orlando, Rachel Ripley (Brandon), Mehgan Donegan (Josh), Ashlee Kester (Brandon), Danielle Cates (Levi), Dagen Cates, Ava Cates, her eighteen great-grandchildren, McKinley Dozier, Victoria Jones, Veronika McKlean (Justin), Cole Jones, Miller Yaverski, Presley Yaverski, Jayden Hanner, Elizabeth Hanner, Eli Hanner, Hailey Jones (Bobby), Braiden Toms, Wyatt Toms, Briella McCoy, Quinnella McCoy, Zoella McCoy, Leila Ripley, Leighton Ripley and Lilly Ripley, One great-great grandchild, Zylar Potter.
She is predeceased by her lifelong partner Dave Capps, her biological mother Sarah Caroline Parker, her parents, Grady and Lizzie Parker, her brothers, Robert Parker, Carl Parker, Elvis Parker, Paul Parker, and Arnold Parker, her sister Dorothy Flynn, her grandsons Robert Kester, Kade Potter, and Gavyn Potter.
A memorial service to celebrate Margaret’s life will be held at Oaklawn Activity Center, (4904 S Clifton Ave, Wichita, Kansas) on May 18th, 2025 at 2:00 PM. She will be laid to rest in the Waynick Cemetery located in Slayden, Tennessee.
Margaret Cates (Granny) will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. She will be remembered for her kindness, hard work, and unwavering love for family and friends.
